ARMISTICE DAY - GREAT WAR VICTIMS REMEMBRANCE DAY

On the Military cemetery in Nis, on the occasion of the Armistice Day in WW First, the wreaths were laid on the memorial ossuary in Serbian part of the cemetery and on the memorial part where British soldiers were buried. On this occasion, also was paid homage to the war victims. The wreaths were laid in the name of the City of Nis by PhD Zoran Perisic, in the name of Palilula Municipality Boban Dzunic, president, the chief of the Nis administration district, Aleksandar Cvetkovic, delegation of the Serbian Army, Police administration in Nis, the descendants of the deceased, as well as delegations of the association that cherish tradition of liberation wars.

In this memorial Military complex on Delijski Vis and Nis Palilula municipal territory, 2,500 of Serbian soldiers were buried who gave their lives for freedom. Beside them, also the soldiers from England and France are buried. On Delijski Vis were buried also those soldiers who were suffering from typhus fever in 1914 and 1915 and who were hospitalized in the Nis military hospital. In Military hospital beside soldiers about 3000 patients were treated and daily in the time of six month epidemic period about 35 died daily. In one part of the cemetery, the soldiers Austro-Hungarians were buried and then this was continued during the Second World War. With the project of adaptation of this space, it was estimated that the ossuary should be rearranged into memorial complex it is said in the Society for cherishing libertarian traditions. The Mayor of Nis emphasized that the history of our people is heroic and its sacrifices must not be forgotten. Rector of Prizren Seminary based in Nis, Archpriest Milutin Timotijević, told the crowd that the freedom of a nation the greatest value. `If Serbia could motivate its own people to giver their lives for the country, maybe it could also motivate to live honorably, honestly and fairly for it`, said Timotijevic.

After honoring the Serbian soldiers, leaders of the City of Nis and Palilula laid wreaths and English military cemetery. In the central part of the cemetery, which is devoted to British soldiers killed in the First World War, a monument in the shape of a cross and 41 memorial plaque with a raised plinth in six regular lines. On the octagonal pedestal of the monument there is a record of the victims who died in France, Belgium and other countries and to the English language. British Commonwealth military cemetery covers an area of about 300 square meters surrounded by a stone fence, placed under the protection of the law in 1983 and was created in 1915, when he was in the Military Hospital in Nis, killing nine English soldiers from the Royal Military Army. Memorial Cross has set up a cemetery avenged on 12 May 1929.

In the presence of family members and former British ambassador in Belgrade, Mr. Kennard and Consul Mr. Blekneja, English cemetery was consecrated by Bishop of Nis personally Dositej. The designer of the cemetery was the architect Robert Lorimer. On that day, as the press reporting, fraternal cooperation of English and Serbian troops in the fight against a common enemy, even more solidified English-Serbian friendship.

Armistice Day, 11th November, in memory of all innocent victims between 1914 and 1918, is Serbia's national holiday and is celebrated nationwide series of events.
